You are at risk of having your Twitter account suspended
Understand the most common reasons to have your account suspended and how to avoid them
Hello! Happy Friday!
Since weeks ago, several accounts of Twitter were suspended, including from artists. In this article, we'll explore some common reasons why Twitter accounts get suspended and provide tips on how to avoid falling into these traps. After talking to several of people who got their account suspended, I compiled some reasons that could have triggered the suspension of their accounts. Fortunately, some of them are already back with their accounts, but the process to recover your Twitter account and write a good appeal will be the topic of the next article!
Let’s get started!

Reasons for Twitter suspension and how to avoid them
There are certain behaviors that can lead to account suspension. Here I compiled some of them, after reviewing the main Twitter rules and talking to several artists that got their accounts suspended recently.
Repetition of Content: Sharing the same image, text, or link multiple times can be flagged as spammy behavior by Twitter's algorithms. While artists may want to promote their work, it's important to vary your content and avoid excessive repetition. This also includes replying GM/GN posts with the similar text.
Excessive or Rapid Retweets, Quotes, or Replies: Rapid or frequent retweeting and quoting of tweets can also trigger a ban as well as rapid or frequent replies. To avoid this, space out your retweets, quotes, and replies. Limit the number per hour to maintain a natural engagement pattern.
Lack of Verification (Blue Check): Although not officially confirmed, I can speculate that verified accounts (those with the blue checkmark) receive preferential treatment and be less likely to get suspended. While verification is not guaranteed, it may provide an added layer of protection. I mean, you tend to be able to make more mistakes before your account gets actually suspended.
Imbalanced Following/Follower Ratio: Having significantly more accounts that you follow than followers can be seen as suspicious behavior by Twitter's algorithms and increase the likelihood of suspension. Aim to maintain a balanced ratio of following and followers. Remember the algorithm already uses the ratio of following vs followers to compute 'your score'. Lower score = higher chances to get a ban.
Aggressive Following/Unfollowing: Mass following or unfollowing accounts in a short period, or engaging in follow-unfollow tactics, can flag your account as spammy and result in suspension. Be mindful of your actions and avoid overly aggressive growth strategies.
Overuse of Direct Messages (DMs): Engaging in excessive DMs, particularly by excessive sharing tweets in order to inflate engagement, may be seen as unnatural behavior by Twitter's algorithms. Keep DM interactions organic and avoid spamming users with shared content.
Posting Sensitive or Inappropriate Content or Engaging with Such Contents: Sharing content that is graphic, explicit, or violates Twitter's content policies can lead to suspension. Exercise discretion and avoid posting material that could be considered offensive or inappropriate. Engaging with such kind of content can algo trigger the algorithm to flag your account and later to suspend it. Make sure to go to your “Settings > Privacy and Safety > Content you see” and make it looks like mine:
Engaging in Automated Behavior: Using automated tools or scripts to perform actions such as replying, tweeting, retweeting, liking, or following/unfollowing accounts in a robotic or spammy manner can trigger suspension. Avoid relying on automation for your Twitter activity.
Tips to Avoid Getting Suspended
Create Original Content: Focus on producing unique and original content that showcases your creativity as an artist. Avoid sharing identical images, text, or links repeatedly to prevent triggering spam filters.
Optimize Your Profile: Pin important links to your profile and include them in your bio to make it easy for followers to access your work and website. It also prevents you of the need to share links often.
Manage Your Following: Regularly review and unfollow inactive or irrelevant accounts to maintain a healthy following/follower ratio and avoid appearing spammy.
Engage Authentically: Focus on building genuine connections and engaging authentically with your audience through meaningful interactions.
